Why I made this game
For a lot of office workers, the annual performance review is a slightly nerve-racking half hour. Is your manager's "Hmm…" a good sign or a bad one? Should you bring up your wins right now, or just say thank you and keep quiet? This game turns that guessing game of reading your boss into a back-and-forth you can laugh at.
Greg's mood is hidden, but his face, his remarks and the things on his desk, like his notes and his coffee, always reflect it in a consistent way. I wanted it to be about reading him, not luck, so that after a few rounds you start to think, "That face means it's time to push." And if you push too hard and earn a frown, I hope the title on your pay stub at least makes you laugh.
About the game's content
The company (Oddball Industries), the people in it (Greg and everyone else) and its HR policies are all fictional. The raises in the game are made-up numbers and have nothing to do with real salaries or market rates. The game doesn't encourage you to haggle like this in a real performance review.
